WHAT IS THE BEST CAREER FOR THE NEXT 10 YEARS?
If you’ve spent some of the festive season reflecting on the last 12 months and envisioning your future, you’ve likely tackled a few big questions. “What is the best career for the next 10 years?” may have been one of them. It’s definitely a big one! And the answer is going to be different for every individual. Here’s why.
What type of personality do you have?
The best career for you partly depends on who you are as a person. Introvert/extrovert, big picture/detail oriented, creative/analytical . . . and so on. An introvert may prefer a job with less human interaction; a creative may be drawn to roles where they have the freedom to innovate. Self-awareness is crucial when choosing a career path. And there are plenty of people and resources to help you define who you are, e.g. career counsellors, personality guides and tests.
What are your current skills and qualifications?
You may already be qualified in a trade or have skills that are suited to a specific industry sector or profession. But are they useful for the career you aspire to? If you’re a financial advisor, can you easily transition to your dream job in marketing? Chances are you’ll have some gaps to fill first that will vary in size and complexity. Reskilling and upskilling are your career’s best friends.
What career outcomes are you looking for?
What does your “best career” bring you? Are you looking for promotion, industry recognition, financial reward, entrepreneur opportunities, business travel? Or are you looking for a steady, consistent role with a regular income and work-life balance? A career can lead you to many destinations. It’s important to nut out what you really want. Otherwise, you’ll soon be on the move again.
Where are the most jobs and opportunities?
In Australia, some industry sectors are on the up, while others look to be declining. A couple of months ago, we dived into a recent report from Jobs & Skills Australia, which highlighted a series of industries where employment is set to grow the most in the next 10 years. They include:
- Healthcare & Social Assistance
- Professional, Scientific & Technical Services
- Education & Training
- Accommodation & Food Services

Obviously, it’s no cause for alarm if your preferred option doesn’t feature in the list. But a look at the big picture is always useful when you’re envisioning your future.
If you plan to focus on your career journey in 2024, set time aside to think things through. Ask yourself some important questions: What type of person are you? What are your skills? What do you want from your career? And where are all the jobs going to be? The answers will help you define the best career for you. Then, all you need to do is go out and make it happen!
